Matière et lumière is an artist’s book developed from a research project initiated in 2002, in which photography is conceived as a site of tension between matter and light. The work is grounded in a practice that unites the registration of reality with direct intervention on the photographic material, allowing the image to assert itself as an autonomous form.

A critical text by Jean-Claude Lemagny, published in full in its original French version, accompanies the book and provides its theoretical framework. Lemagny identifies in the internal tension of rhythm the decisive difference between art and decoration, locating the photographic work within a separate aesthetic space governed by its own internal equilibrium.

Printed from 4×5” negatives as silver gelatin photographs on Ilford and Kentmere Art Classic paper, the book contains twelve images, each mounted on acid-free boards and hand-sewn into a unique structure. Produced in an edition of two, Matière et lumière stands as a self-contained work in which image, text, and material form a single, indivisible entity.

 

Matière et lumière è una ricerca avviata nel 2002, fondata su una riflessione sul rapporto tra fotografia, materia e luce. In questo lavoro la fotografia non è intesa come descrizione, ma come campo di tensione, in cui la registrazione del reale e l’intervento sul materiale fotografico convivono in modo inseparabile.

Un testo critico fondamentale di Jean-Claude Lemagny accompagna l’opera. Nel suo scritto, Lemagny distingue con chiarezza arte e decorazione, individuando nella tensione interna del ritmo la condizione che permette all’immagine fotografica di costituirsi come opera autonoma. Se la decorazione si integra nel mondo, l’opera d’arte si colloca in uno spazio estetico separato, fondato sul proprio equilibrio interno.

In questo orizzonte, le immagini di Matière et lumière rifiutano ogni funzione ornamentale e si affermano come forme autosufficienti, in cui la luce incide la materia e la materia trattiene la luce, generando una tensione che rimanda esclusivamente all’opera stessa.
